"Remote" stations within an hour or two of Dundee

I'm on holiday in Dundee with my train mad sons (14). They want to get a train to a "remote" station and for practical reasons this probably needs to be at most 3 hours away, but shorter would be better.

"Remote" seems to be defined as the immediate surroundings of the station I.e. trees, fields , etc and little or no housing shops. A massive city could be a kilometre away, but as long as it's our of sight they don't care

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I want to say Dalwhinnie potentially? About 90 minutes of being on trains though add on your connection time at Perth to that.

Running up to Brechin, and taking the Caledonian Railway to Bridge of Dun may be worth a punt, as there are few houses around this station, but plenty of train interest. It feels far more remote than it is…

I don’t recall there being much around Gleneagles station, though it’s some years since I set foot on the platform.

Dunkeld on the Highland main line is beautiful, very rural and about 50 minutes away from Dundee by car.

How about Stow - counterintuitive as you’re in the opposite direction from “remote Scotland” - but as a bonus you get a trip over both Bridges.
Being a modern reopening - it doesn’t have that remote a feel, though. Barry Links probably feels remoter!
Promisec them a trip to Barrhill or Altnabreac next year!

Thanks all. Funnily enough while I was doing Parkrun they decided on Dalwhinnie! Will look at the others though, as I suspect this will not be our only trip this week

Dalwhinnie station is in a wonderfully scenic setting, assuming you can see the scenery through the rain, clouds and mist … you may find it useful to know there’s a very good cafe/ restaurant called the Apiary (or at least there was, in 2024) where you can recharge between trains. It can’t be more than five minutes walk.

Not all trains stop there, so choose your schedule carefully.

Barry Links just south of Carnoustie with just one a train a day in each direction so a logistical puzzle but possible nice walk along the beach to/from Carnoustie

See if you can do some if not all of the trip on a Scotrail’s HST.

They won’t be around for much longer and at 50 years old are worth experiencing. For a real treat pay the £15 first class supplement on board the HST.

Assuming you know how to check times for HST operated trains via today’s running on Real Time Trains website?

Apiary is still there, and still good. Dalwhinnie certainly feels pretty remote!

choice. We hadn't read the thread so ended up chancing across The Apiary while trying to find the filling station to get some snacks. Nice spot, although part of me cried seeing how quickly my boys scarfed down their £16 mac-and-cheeses. Decent vegan options too.

And the boys had already made sure we got HSTs
