Red Tail Lights For Shunts?

I've heard that red tail lights are not required for stock moves of under 440 yards (and that white lights may be left on for those moves), which I had not previously been aware of. Is this true, or is it an old/defunct stipulation (the use of yards as a unit suggested to me that it is quite old)?

Not necessarily for shunting but it's still permitted in the rules.

A shunting locomotive can have a red and white light if fitted (TW1 14.3).

If a Wrong direction movement is less than 440yds then there's no requirement to change the lights (TW1 14.4). In the same clause a train going to assist in the wrong direction shows white lights at both end.

I think I know where you've heard that recently.

The railway still works almost entirely in both imperial and metric.

No - there were various responses, but I still am not certain about the '440 yards' rule. I just wanted to know if that distance still stands; purely out of interest, not having heard it before.

In the Rule Book the distance is actually given in metric first then imperial in this format - 400 metres (440 yards).

I think that is changing in December 2024.

It is, yes. The lights that must be displayed at either end of the train (based on the '400m rule') will be the same for all wrong-direction movements, regardless of whether the movement is to assist a failed train. And the instructions in TW1 relating to use of the warning horn during a wrong-direction movement are also being withdrawn, as the requirement to use the horn in this scenario was withdrawn from TW7 in 2014(!).
