Ever since I was tiny I've been travelling by train, most weeks hopping on the train into either Manchester or Wigan.
Although that whole time I was always paying attention to the "special" trains, freight trains, Virign's Pendolinos and Super Voyagers, and the Transpennine Express units, all special to me.
To me, locomotive hauled trains are only novel because of their rarity, I care about as much for a Freight train as I would for a 745, multiple units, especially passenger trains have always been interesting to me.
Truly becoming an "enthusiast" likely grew with more access to the internet, seeing Geoff Marshall hunt down a 195 encouraged me to do the same, and the end of the 142s would've been something I would've been on if I knew (unfortunately I found out only the day after).
In the years since I've built a massive spreadsheet for logging the trains I see and ride (not knowing about spotlog, and now it's there I'm glad I have my spreadsheet rather than having to rely on some other developers).
I see what many have talked about on this thread and maybe if I had been there things would feel different, but to me things are only getting better from where things (For me) started.
