Not sure if this is in the right section so feel free to move.

Where do railtour companies get staff from? I'm talking on train staff such as guards/stewards etc. I know catering is usually subbed out but is there a place for people to volunteer their services/look up vacancies?

Guards are employed by the TOC. With regard stewards, most tour promoters take on people they know, quite a few having been regular passengers with the company previously.

It all depends on the operator. SRPS Railtours and Vintage Trains are subsidiaries of preservation societies (SRPS and Birmingham Railway Museum Trust respectively) - they take volunteers on from within the membership continuously

Compass Tours recruit Stewards on their website from time to time - they were recruiting Stewards in the north and Scotland until recently

As for the other operators, it might be worth sending off a speculative email to them asking if they're taking on Stewards, and why you'd be suitable

It's also worth noting that some operators (eg. SRPS) do their own catering onboard, while others (eg. Spitfire) sub theirs out to The Gravy Train Catering, and that you may be required to much more work at some operators than others
