Hi,
I'm a university student currently nearing the end of my second year in BSc Transport Management at Aston Uni in Birmingham.

As part of my course, it is required/recommended that as my third year I undertake a year of paid employment in an industry sector relevant to my course, i.e Logistics and transport.

I have applied to a number of placements that have been offered through the University, and sent letters of interest to a number of other transport and logistics concerns but, in common with the majority of my colleagues on my degree course, have so far failed to attain a placement.

So I was just wondering if anybody knew of any undergraduate placement schemes that are available in the rail industry for the academic year 2010/11 that I haven't heard about, or any other general ideas in that area?

I'm pretty flexible in location; anywhere within about 100 miles of Birmingham, which includes the likes of London, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield. I also have previous experience working in Logistics and Transport concerns, having spent time with National Express local bus operations in Birmingham and in the logistics department of Lafarge Cement UK.

Any thoughts?

I'm currently in my second year at York doing Environmental Science, but hoping to do transport management afterwards. I'm in the same boat as you I'm afraid, applied to TfL but didn't get in, Metro in Leeds aren't taking people on this year due to budget cuts, Nexus only take on graduates and GMPTE weren't looking for transport planners. Not much around even a few months ago, and doesn't look any better now. Hopefully next year might bring some more onto the market.

Best thing to do is keep you eyes and ears open in case something appears, but have something different lined up as well.

Hope you get the job, doesn't seem to be many around this year. At least next year I can start to apply for the graduate jobs, which there seem to be a lot more of available.
