Query regarding a notice seen earlier

Spotted a notice in the driving cab (but visible to passengers as well as the driver) on a bus earlier which said "Please remove your hi-vis while driving".

Why is it likely to be important that drivers do this?

Some management types take a dim view from an appearance perspective. I once knew of a senior management type referring to drivers in hi-vis' "looking like binmen", which obviously didn't go down well with the workforce.

Additionally, particularly during hours of darkness, the resultant reflections on the windscreen can be extremely distracting and I suspect have probably been attributed to accidents.

Because safety wear is required in areas of risk and shouldn’t be worn in a customer facing role.

It could cause extreme glare to oncoming vehicles if their headlights shine on the retro-reflective material on the other driver's hi-viz jacket.

The glare from retro-reflective material in sunlight can be painful - I've personally experienced this at football matches from stewards' hi-viz jackets.

Because some managers think it makes the drivers look scruffy.

Some will try and claim it’s a safety issue and others will be straightforward and say they simply don’t like the appearance.

It makes drivers look scruffy apparently and it also reflects on the windscreen in low light conditions.

Stagecoach have been known to be strict on this while First couldn't care less as long as the duty is covered but don't dare step out the cab without it in a depot!

It can be a disciplinary matter if drivers are repeatedly caught doing it.

At the end of the day, it is a safety item which often gets dirty quickly, not a piece of smart uniform attire which operators want presented to customers.

I’ve found they lose their reflective qualities when washed too.

IIRC they should be washed a maximum of 3 times before replacement
