prosecution form - what is next?

I am quite worried. Forgot to write the date on the carnet ticket from CBG to KGX this morning. The ticket inspector asked me a bunch of questions and I explained I forgot. He filled in a white form that says prosecution, mentioned this was a caution and took my carnet ticket. Wondered what are the next steps. The stub of the form says prosecution department.

Called up First Capital Connect and they said I'd receive a letter in 14 days. Assume that I would just get a penalty fare charge?

The inspector chose not to issue a Penalty Fare, so FCC are considering prosecuting you. They may offer you an out of court settlement (which could be considered a sort of penalty charge) with the threat of prosecuting you if you don't pay it.

If they do decide to prosecute, then the legislation they would use would depend on the available evidence, but if they chose the lesser Byelaw offence (which is perhaps more likely), they do not need to prove intent, but it's not a recordable offence.

Did you pass the ticket through one of the barriers at Cambridge so the magnetic stripe would already have recorded its use?

Not sure about nowadays, but previously carnets didn't work barriers

I think generally they work at the country end while the barriers at King's Cross are set to reject them.

Yes, I passed through the barrier since they are always closed in Cambridge. Regret forgetting to put the date -- it's become too automatic since I use the train daily to commute and that day I was rushing having missed my usual train.

Having used it at the gate at Cambridge helps your case a bit hopefully.

I used to find that I had no trouble with my carnet tickets at King's Cross, but could often not even begin my journey at Hatfield - with it saying 'seek assistance' and giving an error that equated to it not being in date!
