Is there anywhere that does paired by direction with the fasts on the outside and island platforms at the minor stations? Seems like that would be the best - means you get to stand in the middle with a decent view of everything, and a local train can't block your view of the whole thing at once.

Also avoids the problem of a long walk between the platforms at local stations, and perhaps means less duplication of passenger facilities (you don't need to provide separate waiting shelters for each direction, for example).
Between Clapham Junction and Barnes - although some fast trains call at the outer platforms at Putney

I thought the Up (London bound) Fast was in the middle with the Up slow on the outside? This avoids the slow trains from the Hounslow loop crossing at Barnes Junction.

Officially the lines from north to south are US - UF - DF - DS. In practice it is actually used as US - UF - DS - DF, although as all four lines are the same speed, arguably they aren't really fast and slow lines anyway.

Not actually a very long section of route at all, but Millbrook (Hants) is a single island in the middle with both fasts outside the slows.

Overnight services between Waterloo and Woking would be more viable if the lines weren't paired like they are.

IMO more places should have the fast lines on the outer tracks instead of the middle when paired by direction
