Hi guys, I was wondering I am 20 and have set my sights on becoming a driver.

I understand that it is extremely tough to get a trainee job.

I was wondering if I became a maintenance engineer with one of TOCs - via one of their apprenticeships, and then apply internally for a driver's position. Do you think this would have much success?

If you pass all the tests and interview well, it would put you at the top of the pile ;)

Thanks wessex. Would you say a conductor/guard would be the same?

What about the maintenance engineer job in itself...have you had experience of this job? And is this 'safety critical' - I think it is.

Does anyone also know what technical grade A/B/C means?

i would say yes to both engineering side and conductor/guard, because alot off trainee driver jobs come up on internal vacancie lists, this is usually if only 2/3/4 drivers are required, so they will try to reqruit from within.
