If you are seeking advice on planning a journey and buying a ticket

If you are looking to plan a journey and purchase the most appropriate ticket(s) for that journey then the Forum's ticketing site is likely to be able to provide you with the answer to this question (the Forum will receive a small commission on tickets sold through this site which go towards the upkeep of the Forum).

If following a search on the ticketing site you are still unsure or, you request is complex in nature (perhaps involving multiple railcards, breaks of journey, staff discounts, etc) then many members are more than happy to help you by providing advice on how to get you good value fares. However to try and help them do so when creating a new thread asking for advice on the best ticket(s) to buy for your journey please ensure you keep your request concise but ensure to include the following:

• The origin and destination stations of your whole journey (and any via points if applicable)
• The date(s) or day(s) you are travelling, and whether you are making a single or return journey
• The time you wish to travel (eg: exact time, morning/afternoon/evening, peak/off-peak, time not important, etc.) and whether you require flexibility or are happy to be booked on a specific train
• Whether you hold a Railcard or some other discount entitlement
• Whether you are willing to accept a (much) longer journey time in return for cheaper fares (not always applicable) – but be careful, do you want the cheapest fare? We sometimes are asked for this, but the cheapest often results in greatly extended journey times, many changes of train, and may not be best value

We cannot guarantee that we are able to provide details for the cheapest tickets for your journey as this depends on your preferences and also down to the fact that the complexities of railway ticketing means that there are various options to explore.

In addition, please avoid using three letter codes in thread titles or where you haven't mentioned the station before. Their use is acceptable for follow-ups where you use the correct code (eg: BNS is Barnes, BHM is Birmingham New Street).

You will see that some members are identified as volunteer Fares Advisor so that you can identify people who are deemed knowledgeable and experienced in railway ticketing matters. Please note that the forum cannot be held responsible for any advice given by any member. Fares Advisors will try their best to give advice where they can, though may not be able to give the optimal advice in every situation.

Responses to requests for advice/help

Posts in this section should be:

• non-accusatory in nature
• positive, constructive and genuine in nature
• informative, factual, accurate and directly relevant
• use trustworthy/accurate sources, where applicable

Furthermore, posts should avoid:

• any allegations or suggestions of wrongdoing
• negative or disparaging comments, or a negative tone
• speculation, guesswork, hypothetical or false equivalence scenarios
• referring to any sources which are not entirely trustworthy, accurate or appropriate.
• causing confusion, such as introducing concepts that aren't relevant/applicable, without good reason.

If any member feels any post does not warrant a response in line with the above principles, we ask that no response is posted; if any post causes concern, we ask that it is not replied to and instead reported, by using the "Report" link underneath the relevant post (for multiple concerns within one thread, please simply report the first such post in the thread, and include all relevant details in that report).
