Hi everyone. Received a NIP in the post today that sent me for a loop. Didn't realise my railcard had expired in July, and had been buying tickets between then and December without that knowledge until called out by an inspector, since which I switched to buying full price tickets. Would be really really appreciated if my letter could be proofread before I send it off to Chiltern!

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing in response to the Notice of Intended Prosecution issued against me regarding my recent journey, during which I was unaware that my railcard had expired.

I sincerely apologise for this oversight. I genuinely believed my railcard was still valid for that journey and any others since its expiry, and had no intention of avoiding the correct fare. Unfortunately, I did not realise that it had expired in June 2024, as I had not received any reminder or prompt about its renewal. I have always purchased valid tickets for my journeys and would not have knowingly travelled with an expired discount entitlement. Since it came to my attention, I have removed the railcard from my Trainline search, and have only bought tickets without a railcard discount.

I am more than happy to pay any outstanding fares or administrative fees necessary to resolve this matter. I kindly request that you consider this as an honest mistake rather than an intentional fare evasion and allow me the opportunity to settle this matter out of court.

Please let me know how I can proceed to rectify this. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Would be really great if I could get feedback on this :( I only have a week or so to respond. I was also wondering if I should ask in the email if they can provide me a list/spreadsheet of the fares that are in question ? Will they know when my railcard expired or should I be proactive with this?

Welcome to the forum!

I think the letter's ok. The only minor amendment I'd make is you should ask if it is possible to settle rather than say you are more than happy eg 'I wondered if it would be possible to settle this matter without being prosecuted. I am willing to pay the outstanding fares plus your administrative costs in dealing with the case'
