I understand these would have been situated every few miles alongside the track but I can’t found out if they would have been situated close to a station/in station environs?

Yes...they were often located within station yards. I can't provide a photo....but I'm sure someone will be along soon who can.

If you mean the small, one room huts where the PW could shelter in really bad weather, boil a kettle for lunch or leave heavier tools overnight if they were returning to the same spot the next day, then they could well be at a station if that meant a reasonable spacing, of both distance and workload, from the next. However, they would often be stuck away in a corner so as not to interfere with operations or developments. At stations of any size that a gang was based at then the hut would probably be a bit larger and include or have adjacent to it one or two stores, some of which might ressemble the small huts. There are really so many possibilities.
