Planned Engineering Work in France?

I am looking to travel from Paris to Nice on Saturday 6th September this year (first trip by TGV so very excited!). I know the bookings are not yet open, however like most on here, I've planned for quite a while to get a certain train on that day.

Trouble now comes is that the timetable for that day seems to have gone haywire. No direct services from Paris to Nice at all. Indeed there seems to be quite a thinning of services that day.

Does anyone know the reason why this is? Or is there a way I could find out?

I only ask as it affects my other travel plans!

An immediate guess, which may be wide of the mark:

comparing the TWO preceding Saturdays on the French version of the SNCF site.

(1) only IDTGVs are open for booking beyond the end of August

(2) the Saturday service is reduced after 23 August because its "la rentree" - everyone's back to work/school....

I'd be surprised if it was option (2) and there were no trains to Nice after 23 August. Certainly I did Paris to Nice on Sat 15 Sep 2012 on a through train, and I think there was one every 2 hours.

Sorry, I meant it's a combination of 1 and 2. There are 1-2 fewer trains timetabled on 30 August than 23 August.

You're right that there's normally a train every 2 hours; bookings should open 3 months in advance and on the SNCF website you can sign up for a booking alert - there's a thread on that somewhere.

There are engineering works on the Paris-Lyon high speed line during August so the timetables have changed.
I am planning to go to Basel in last week of August and about 10 days ago I could not find many trains in the journey planners.
However I got an email alert from voyages-SNCf on Tuesday to say that booking had now opened for the period 24 to 31 August. The train I wanted had reappeared and I have now booked it.

I think ther works were due to finish by 30 august so I expect the bookings/train times for your travel date to become available shortly. Either sign up for email alerts or check the booking sites a couple of times each week.
