Places that need a metro system

That's OK until the semi-fast service ends up stuck behind the stopper for four miles...

Since this is a fantasy thread, the Metrolink could go 4 track like many of the lines on the New York Subway, in order to run effective stoppers and fasts.

They would build tracks for overtaking in numerous places along the link, as well as joining up with National Rail, doing Picca - Picca Garden - Victoria - Eccles/Ashton-Under-Lyne

Or indeed like the Met in Harrow, or the Met/Jubilee in Wembley, or the Picc/District in Chiswick, or the Jubilee/DLR in Stratford (okay admittedly that last one they can't actually share tracks)...

The Obvious answer is Leeds, certainly when you take into account the immediately continuous Urban area of Bradford, Wakefield, Dewsbury/Ossett and Wharfedale.

The first thing to do would be to open up more stations & electrify the existing heavy rail lines, so places like:

Armley Canal Road
Kirkstall Abbey
Kirkstall Forge
Calverley & Rodley
Apperley Bridge
Idle
New Wortley
Armley Moor
Stanningley
Laisterdyke
Low Wortley
White Rose Centre
Batley Carr
Elland Road
Beeston
East Ardesley
Wrenthorpe

(all on the Airedale, Caldervale & Huddersfield lines) had services again. You could then 'fill in' with lines such as:

Leeds-Bradford: via Armley Road, Stanningley Road, Bramley Station, Pudsey, Tyersal, Bowling (using old rail alignment between Pudsey & Bowling)

Leeds-Dewsbury: via Old LNWR viaduct, Gelderd Road, Ring Road Beeston, Churwell, Morley Queen Street, Tingley, Shawcross

Leeds-Wakefield: via Hunslet Lane, Belle Isle, Middleton, East Ardesley, Lofthouse Interchange P&R, Lofthouse Gate, Outwood, Newton Hill

Sorry it's me again, and still nattering on about former West Midlands train lines.

Done some more research and have come up with this:

Red = heavy
Blue = light

Mostly follows former railway lines.

Basically instead of the South Staffordshire line being light rail, it's heavy. Parallel to it is the Darlaston Loop line, which joins with the Wolverhampton-Oxford line from Priestfield to Dudley. From Dudley we use the Halesowen-Old Hill line. Also included is the A34 corridor extension planned, and the planned Wolverhampton and Walsall railway metro. Finally a short line to cut a corner to allow Walsall to Dudley.
