There is a useful piece of software I found a couple of months ago which really helps with photography. Maybe not so much for trainspotting photography as in most cases if you're going out to see a specific train at a specific time then the software is of no use.
Otherwise, The Photographer's Ephemeris is a small piece of software, you select the location where you plan to take photographs and it shows you where the sun will be positioned on that local at the time that you specify.
It is a little tricky to get to grips with but it is very useful.

These two are grab shots taken on ASA200 film at f5.6 with 1/500 shutter speed through a not very clean window on a 222 departing from St Pancras - each end of one Eurostar; the one of 3230 was with the window ( only just! ) shaded, but for the one of 3999 the sunlight was not only directly on the window but the picture was taken looking into the light; it actually came out far better than I had expected it to; it really was a case of aim and click!
In neither picture was the lens touching the window as this can cause a loss of focus, which is a factor that has to be balanced against the possibility of internal reflections!

Nice shots! I've been to St Pancras a few times but never with my camera. One day maybe.
Shouldn't be a problem. I was taking pictures of the scenery along the coastal side of the Fife circle and didn't think anything of it...the guard probably saw me with the camera too and said nothing either.
I also took some pictures (some of them turned out pretty well) on the route back between Glasgow and Crewe - on that one though I had the advantage of there only been me and my friend in the carriage with the FC host/guard appearing occasionally, either way not a problem.

Hint: The 10.25 Sheffield departure parallels the 10.25 Paris departure and the 10.55 Sheffield departure passes an arrival from Bruxelles.
Note: The 10.55 Sheffield is currently an HST until the 222 refurbishments are completed, ie vestibule droplights are available...

Thanks! I might go in July sometime, but not this week as I'm on holiday and don't want to go anywhere near London!
I'll be photographing down in Hitchin though, and who knows, maybe there'll be a spectacular incident which causes a Eurostar to divert and pass through!
Done this today on a train going into Glasgow Central. I was so engrossed in my video screen that I never saw the ticket guy beside me (even though I had already shown him my ticket). He said "I used to do that!", gave me the thumbs up, then went into the other carriage.
Then he pulled out a big f*ck off knife and proclaimed himself to be the son of......
