Pendolino Unreserved std class carriages

Just checking this - Avanti info on line says unreserved standard class seats on Pendolinos are

"If it’s an 11-coach formation, you will find unreserved seating in Coaches C, G and U. If it’s a nine-coach formation, Coach C is the only designated coach for unreserved seats."

Is it really the case that 3 whole std class carriages have un reserved seats on 11 carriage train - or is it just some of the seats in each of those carriages ?

Just trying to reserve seats on the 11.30 from Euston to Glasgow tomorrow (16 July) using the Trans Pennine express function - the function works OK but only offers 1st and standard premium reservations for this train - which I assume is because all the reservable seats are booked (other trains that day offered std, std premium and 1st class reservations via the TPE seat reservation tool - but when progressing the reservation the end result said 'sit in any unreserved seat' on the TPE booking output - along with a reservation collection code)

Avanti are correct.
The entirety of Coach U and G are unreserved (in addition to Coach C) on 11 coach trains
9 car trains only have the seats in Coach C unreserved.

This is done since it's generally inconsistent as to which trains have 11 coaches or not, so best not to reserve people into seats that might not exist.


Coach C has 48 seats (including the 2 usually used by staff/their bags)
Coach U has 72 seats
Coach G has 74 seats

So an 11 car has 146 more seats than a 9 car (over quadruple)

I can confirm Journey Planner agrees that the 11:30 Euston to Glasgow is indeed fully booked in Standard Class, as are the next few tomorrow until 15:30. The 10:30 is showing availability for a Standard Class seat reservation.

RTT to find out the platform, if it's platform 1-3 the barriers will be there, but if they're open just walk through, or use your ticket if they're set up to enter.
The rest of the platforms will either be free to walk onto, or someone will be blocking entry which will form a queue from all the other people who used RTT.

Feel free to just ignore the "Platform closed" boards, let the only thing stop you be a member of staff or a physical barrier.

Between a few of them but not all of them. The grouping is something like 1 (has its own gateline), 2 & 3 (gateline), 4-7 (ungated), 8-11 (gateline), 12-15 (ungated), 16 (ungated).

Not quite right as far as I know.
1, 2 and 3 share one gateline.
Admittedly it has been quite a while since I used those platforms so they could've changed it.


There is the physical route between all the platforms but they're staff only (and I think sometimes used for Passenger Assist too).

Platform 1 has it's own gateline with a larger gateline for platforms 2 & 3.

Has it always been that way and I somehow didn't notice or did they change it? I thought platform 1 was accessed through the gateline for 2/3 then going round the front of the trains at P1/2.

Don't think it's ever been that way, it's a messy layout but it's always involved having the gateline for platform 1 be 'north' of the buffer stops.
