Pendolino storage areas

Quick one, some standard carriages on the 390s have shuttered store areas opposite the small toilets, I've never seen them used, does anyone know what the intended use was?

Reminds me of a shuttered compartment I saw on a 168/0, also opposite a small toilet. I wonder what it was for on that?

Always assumed they used the areas behind the driving cabs for that.

Certainly not. A mess area would have a door not a shutter. This looks like storage of some kind.

It contains emergency equipment and other stuff such as film for broken windows. there's only one in coach a, the small toilets in other coaches have electrical cabinets there instead.
