Passengers stranded after being let off train for fresh air

I thought whistle were required under the RSSB rule book when communicating between platform dispatcher and guard? How does that work for trains that are dispatched by non GWR stations? SWR, GTR, NR and probably TfW stations.

They're used if drawing attention to a safety requirement, but they're not required for dispatch - certainly at SWR my whistle was never required for communicating with my dispatcher - its purpose was to start the process, even if I was on my own, but ultimately it was the time on the clock that decided when it started. There was no obligation to blow it more than once before you closed the doors - and effectively, GWR have just gotten rid of that requirement.

The same unit was the cause of the cancellation of the 1945 service after the crew refused to do a second round trip on it after the experience of the first one with Bank Holiday revellers.

I was expecting to get that train from Hope to Sheffield. There were no trains for 3 hours as a result, the previous one being cancelled until further notice due to staff shortages!

Whistles haven't been a rule book requirement for at least 30 years

This was done far better by the GWR guard on a Reading-Gatwick service today that was stuck at Guildford for about 40 minutes while emergency services treated someone who'd jumped off Farnham Road Bridge onto the tracks. We weren't even explicitly told we were allowed to leave the train but of course many people did, and when we were cleared to move the guard simply rounded everyone up and left when the platform had emptied off.

Was that "better" when we don't actually know the full circumstances of the original incident?

I would make it possible for the driver/guard to make announcements from speakers on the exterior of the train to the passengers outside.

People should just be warned about the risk they're taking in getting off a train at an unscheduled stop.
Any more than that could be up to the guards discretion, depending on the circumstances.
