Is there a way to see on bustimes or something similar how many people are using a service, and from what stops? Thankyou.

Some companies publish current passenger levels via BODS but I don't think that data is stored on bustimes.

I'm not quite sure what you mean.

EYMS is the only one I can think of that shows this information, and it's not particularly accurate. I don't think what you're looking for is available.

The detailed information the OP is looking for would be useful to competitors so I doubt if operators would make it publicly available.

I'm inclined to agree, at least in precise numbers and on a historical basis.

Ultimately, it may depend on the "why" the OP wants it. If they are arranging a trip with a larger group and want to know if there is capacity on a particular service (nothing the location as North Derbyshire, so a walking group or something may be plausible), then a quick e-mail to the operator may prove beneficial and they may be only too happy to give a vague idea of how much spare capacity there is on a specific journey. As another example, if it's to help someone with social anxiety to help identify a specific journey pattern that may work for them.

By contrast, if the request is just for enthusiast interest, or to quote back at them because of thoughts the vehicle is too large or small, it's unlikely to be received well for just such competitive reasons, and isn't what Bus Open Data was designed for.

No, I'm just interested in how well local services are doing, because I'm not constantly out looking at or riding on buses. If this info is not availible, it's no problem, I just would've liked to see it if it did.

Something that may be worth looking at is local authority Bus Service Improvement Plan documents. Some of those did give details on passenger numbers which you may find helpful.

Interestingly, East Yorkshire, Go North East and the erstwhile Reliance (plus maybe others?) used to include the number of free seats on each bus on bustimes, but then stopped doing that.
East Yorkshire still shows "Seats available" or "Full" but that is not particularly helpful, given that "Seats available" covers 99%+ of the time and will range from nobody but the driver on board to a crowded bus with just one or two seats left.

Or would they put on a larger bus, if one was available, if they knew that a large walking group would be boarding ?

Edit: I remember Metrobus laying on double decker buses in lieu of a coach on commuter route 705 during rail strikes back in the 80's or 90's when heavier loads were expected.

Some routes in some places like the 74, 82 & 87 in Birmingham operated by West Bromwich seem to be busy at all hours of the operating day. Even on a Sunday night.

I think passengers numbers on most routes/journeys probably vary day to day as well ?
