He most certainly was and is remembered by people of my age as being eager to use nuclear weapons in Vietnam in 1964 and he was very heavily defeated by the Democrat candidate Lyndon B. Johnson in a landslide Presidential election in 1964
Strange how not many migrants are clamouring to get into Russia - a European Country (at least in part) or fellow Muslim States such as Saudi Arabia or Iran
Half a million Syrians have gone to Saudi Arabia since the war started. The problem is that syrians do not want to live in refugee camps for the rest of their lives - be they in Jordan, Turkey, Germany or Saudi. You may want them to, perhaps create a few more Gazas to imprison them into, that always goes well, but they don't. And that's why they are trying to go to countries where there is opportunity.
Yet today the former yugoslavia has broken up into a fairly decent place (excluding the rise of the right which is by no means limited to the area).
Most people working for ISIS are doing it because they get paid, or because it's a "cause" they can join in. Remove the oil from ISIS and you cut off their funding (Saudi may still fund them, but only enough to keep them a thorn in Iran's side, not enough to get the West involved).
Very few people actually want the end of the world. ISIS may, US Talk Radio hosts may, but the average man in the desert just wants to earn some money have live his life.

Would have been very interesting if JFK hadn't been shot, but instead forced to retire for Clintoneque reasons.
If Trump does win, there may be a brief period before armageddon which we'll have a joint press conference between him and Boris. Perhaps Boris could take over then, they're identical, and both act like loonies, but at least Boris only plays a loonie on TV.

If our nuclear deterrent was completely free, and we could maintain it without in consequence sacrificing anything else, then that might be a good argument. But it's not free - it eats up about 5-6% of our defence budget, and estimates of the cost of replacing Trident seem to range from £20bn to over £100bn [*]. That's money that could be spent on something that would definitely be useful (such as keeping enough soldiers in the army and making sure they are properly equipped), and which is instead being spent on something that might hypothetically become be useful, if it turns out that the state of the World changes in the next 25 years so as to make it useful.
In the end, it's impossible to make the UK absolutely 100% safe from any attack. We only have finite resources, and we have to choose how to make the most effective use of those finite resources. In that context, spending so much money on a weapon that cannot be used against any current threat, or any threat known to be plausibly likely in the foreseeable future, or indeed, against any threat that has occurred within at least the last 25 years - and indeed a weapon which most Western countries appear to get along fine without, seems a very poor use of resources to me.
[*] Part of the difference seems to be whether you count only the initial cost or also include the on-going maintenance. The higher figures tend to come from anti-nuclear groups so they may be somewhat biased, but I hadn't had time to study enough to figure out if they are reasonable.

Goldwater was the politician for whom the term 'swivel-eyed' was invented.
Regrettably, the Republican Party has been drawn to such people over the past four or five decades, with Sarah Palin and now Trump the latest manifestations. If they weren't so rich and well-backed financially they'd take their rightful place as village idiots: apologies, that's a slur on village idiots. If Trump gets the White House and with Putin in the Kremlin, I think I might take my chances on one of Branson's one-way trips into outer space.

And the former Yugoslavia is a good example of how you defeat terrorism by giving the people something to lose, rather than simply bombing the place into rubble. I know Clinton still likes to think that he defeated Milosevic and Karadzic with his bombs, but really the carrot of EU accession got Serbia and Croatia to sort themselves out, and also got Slovenia to behave itself too

I am just catching up on the Newspapers at work being a little behind with what happened earlier in the week.
Two things made a big impression on me - "Diesel" the poor police hound who succumbed on active service.
Even more horrifying was the end of the female suicide bomber Hasna Ait Boulahchen...
" At one point his officers saw a suicide bombers head fly through the window and land on the other side of the street"
It sounds like something out of a horror movie - terriifyingly it is a statement of fact

It's now been confirmed the female wasn't a suicide bomber but was just very close to a male suicide bomber. She was in the group, but wasn't wearing a vest herself.
