Oyster negative balance

Hi folks

Hopefully someone can advise?

I have just discovered I have a negative balance of £1.30 on my TFL PAYG Oyster card (I am a very infrequent user and live outside Greater London).

I can’t quite figure out how to pay this off and get the £3.00 deposit back without making a journey. The TFL website says I have to top up online, and then touch in on the gate line, NOT just touch on the ticket machine reader to get the credit added. I assume this will charge a fare I don’t want?

Any ideas?

Hi Adam,

The £3 deposit is designed to cover these kind of situations. To be able to get the deposit back you’ll need to top up your card by £1.30 (restoring a balance of zero) and then request your deposit back. You will gain £1.70 by doing this… alternatively keep the card, it never expires!

Can I do this at a ticket machine without having to travel?

If you don't want to mke a journey you'll need to visit a station ticket machine or a local ticket-stop shop and top up the £1.30 there. If you order online then it has to be picked up as part of a journey.

TfL won't chase the outstanding balance though, so you can equally keep it until you next need to use it and top it up at that point. I have an Oyster that I use for testing purposes which has had -80p for several months. Most of the time I use contactless.

I am now using contactless and just wanted to cancel the Oyster card. Will try next time I’m near a ticket machine

I am reasonably sure that you can just get £1.70 back from a TfL ticket machine (one of the larger ones which has a banknote acceptor) without needing to do anything else.
