Owning your dream car.

One of the reasons why I aspire towards a career on Britains railways is that I would like a career which has the potential to allow me to access my other dreams and aspirations.

Ultimately I aim to be able to own and run a 1995-2002 Mazda Rx-7 by the time I am 25 years old, I am 18 years old now and have just been offered a job as a Guard which is a great step in the right direction.

How many of you other fellow rail enthusiasts and employees have used your careers to help you acess your dream cars?

I've used my railway career to enable me to get a far better car than I ran previously. I'm not going to say that it's my absolute dream car, but I don't see an Aston Martin in my immediate future - so for now I've got something sporty, comfortable and relatively economical.

The most important thing is to work out what you can afford, if you can justify buying outright or getting finance, and don't go beyond your means - as it just isn't worth it. Guards money should hopefully allow you to start putting some money to one side each month for deposits or the full cost of the car.

I disagree I know many people who own similar vehicles at a younger age than 25. I've been researching the vehicle for years now I'm fairly sure what to expect; blistering performance, a great sound and high rotary engine maintenance bills.

Fair comment. Go for what you want. DB7s are getting a bit cheaper now, otherwise the Jag XK8 isn't too bad to be going on with.

When I was 18, I got an insurance quote for a 4.2 Jaguar XJ6 (would have been a series 2 back then in the mid 80s). I didn't have enough cash to actually buy one, but it's the thought that counts, or something. The quote was from Endsleigh Insurance, through the Student Union, and it was surprisingly cheap at about £150, and I even told the truth on the form. Looking back, I'm surprised they quoted for me at all at that age, especially on a car like that.

It's funny you should mention insurance as I'm typing from within a car insurance call centre while waiting for the phone to ring. It's May last day working here before I start working for South West in a weeks time then I can begin saving for my car.

Insurance costs won't be the biggest issue by the time I can afford my dream car.
