Overseas Holidays - Sleeper trains / compartments

Thinking that the offerings of the likes of www.greatrail.com and others were offered as 'something special' and a 'great' railway 'journey' I assumed you had your own sleeper compartment on the the train for the week or however long it was. In practice I see you just shuttle between towns before being dumped in a fairly basic hotel for the night. Not much of a holiday having to repack your suitcase every five minutes like a refugee on the run. Anyone know of what I'd call a proper railway journey holiday where you live on the train for the duration?

Certainly deserves closer inspection. Website is a bit flakey and gives the appearance of a recent startup operation, and reading between the lines it looks like you have to spend probably a good two or three hours each way reaching the sight seeing destinations by coach after leaving the train for the day, but thanks for finding it as I doubt I would have done. Shall read up on them a bit more as in principle, you're right, its the sort of thing I was looking for.

You could always have a look at El Transcanábrico in Northern Spain; interesting area and railway (FEVE), but it ain't cheap. Tours on it can also be arranged by PTG Tours if you are interested but want somebody to help arrange it for you.

it probably is a recent startup as the train(s) were in use by DB until December 2009
