Reading another thread about someone getting on the wrong train, reminded me of an incident a couple of years ago. Everything turned out well, but I wondered whether anyone knows what the actual guidance to staff is ?

At very short notice I needed to travel Sheffield to Derby on a Saturday. Normally I would always check for engineering works, but did not have time. A London train was about to depart as I reached the station so I jumped on and validated my Derbyshire Wayfarer (of which I always have a stock at home).

No announcements were made upon departure, but I looked at the scrolling screen and the normal Chesterfield, Derby & Leicester stops were shown.

After leaving Chesterfield we turned left. I thought nothing of this as you can get to Derby that way. However, at Trent we went straight on. Concerned that I would end up in Leicester, I started to move forward to find the guard but before I had reached him an announcement came that we were about to stop at East Mids Parkway (this makes me think that the lack of announcements earlier was due to speaker fault in the coach I was in). The scrolling screen still said next stop Derby.

I alighted at Parkway to be met by a manual ticket check line. I showed my Derbyshire Wayfarer (which isn't normally valid there) and said I was trying to get to Derby and was directed to a waiting bus. When I got home in the evening I found that the recommended way from Sheffield to Derby that day was XC which were running normally and there was no mention of any option to travel via Parkway.

My question is, if the train had not stopped additionally at East Mids Parkway and I had been checked before arriving at Leicester (or on the way back) are staff told to charge an excess fare or are they advised to accept my explanation and not charge?

I don't know what the official line is but they'd have a hard time chasing you for it given that the scrolling display was showing Derby as a calling point. Particularly if you had managed to get a photo/video to prove it.

to be honest i dont think there are any guidelines for this situation. I get it a lot on Southern 377's that I work as there displays can say allsorts of interesting (and non-interesting) things and can quite be often wrong.

You would hope (and I say hope cautiously) that staff would be wise enough to just give information on how to turn round and go back and as I do, write a note so that they have no difficulty going back...

I occasionally get the 13:53 / 15:53 Preston - Euston, which is non-stop and so does not stop at Wigan or Warrington. Despite the on board announcements, it is not uncommon for passengers to board for Wigan and Warrington, only to be overcarried to Euston. Always hear the TM say this to staff when they reach coach K.

I wonder if any unlucky people have been overcarried on the 18:30 from Preston - Glasgow, the only non-stop run, expecting to go to Lancaster but ending up in Glasgow with no way back home at 20:38!

sheff1 - I am very surprised at the direction of the question! The question should be 'Am I entitled to compensation for incorrect information and delay?' and the notion that it could possibly be the other way round is absolutely inconceivable to me. Any request for payment would be robustly contested and no money would be handed over. They'd have a job getting me to agree to a UPFN, too. And yes, I'd be complaining (and I really don't actually bother to complain much, at all).

(I am not a fan of the 'compensation culture' we, as a society, are developing generally, but for something like this, then really, you are entitled to it!)

I was really only trying to find out what guidance was given to staff as I know there are staff on here. Certainly I would contest any payment request in such circumstances but was wondering what staff were told to do.
