Off Peak Return: Glasgow to Leuchars

Hi all; quick question.

A friend travelling from Glasgow to Leuchars on Wednesday and wants to know which ticket to use. They plan to go up from Edinburgh on the 10.27 NXEC service, so the NXEC journey planner says you can leave Glasgow at 09.30. But in my experience, this can be a tight connection at Edinburgh, and was wondering if they could travel on the 09.15?

The restrictions say that travel is only permitted AFTER 0915, but Off Peak Day Returns are valid on the 0915 on those trains.

So in Short: Is a Glasgow to Leuchars Off Peak Return with a Railcard valid on the 0915 departure from Glasgow Queen Street?

Short answer, no:

Restriction Code 8F
Available as listed below Mondays to Fridays (by any train on Saturday and Sunday)

Outward Travel
Valid by any train timed to depart after 0915

Return Travel
Valid by any train timed to depart after 0915


It says after 0915 which means that the first service you could catch would be at 0916, the wording used if the 0915 had been allowed would have been "at or after 0915".

Why not change at Edinburgh Haymarket? The 1027 Edinburgh to Leuchars train calls at Haymarket at 1032 and the 0930 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh sets down at Haymarket at 1012, which should give you sufficient connection time!

Thought that was the case, Glynn, but thanks for confirming. Simpler fares of course, because the Off Peak Day Return is perfectly valid on that service. Makes complete sense. Simple.

Hi Mcr Warrior, and welcome to the forums I've never liked changing at Haymarket personally but that of course doesn't mean that they can't. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not sure about splitting them at Edinburgh, though. They are planning to stop off in Edinburgh for about an hour so on the way back this would be an easy option, albeit slightly dearer. (I am aware that the OPR is valid for breaks of journey, but I know some ticket barriers don't like this and it can cause some confusion). They can also go GLQ-EDB for £8 on the 0915 and it might be worthwhile to do this as they are returning the same day.

I'll probably advise the change at Haymarket or change at Waverley if the train is up to time. Sorted. Thanks guys

Changing at Haymarket (if possible) is better saves 10 min travel time, max one easy platform change (connection can be achieved in approx 45 seconds from Eastbound 'Glasgow lines' to Northbound 'Fife Lines').

Spoke to my friend; she actually ended up getting the 0900 to Edinburgh and changing to the Dundee semi-fast train. Consequently, she needed the Anytime Return (as advised by the staff at QS) which wasn't much more expensive apparently (Just over £17 with the railcard). Thanks for the help, though!
