Shown in the Virgin Trains all routes booklet is an odd service running 4th January to 8th February:

Saturdays, London Euston dep 1730, non stop to Warrington, terminating there 1914.

Is this correct? London to Warrington seems an odd working and there doesn't seem to be a balancing return journey.

Yes, it's on RTT.

There's engineering work in this period on Sundays between Lancaster and Carlisle, so it looks like a positioning move in service utilising a Pendolino that's come out of a 'normal' booked service.

No it is not a positioning move - it is 1S90 (17.30 Euston - Glasgow) cut back to Warrington (its booked first stop) because of engineering work between Warrington and Wigan. The new terminating point sees the headcode changed to a 'P'.

Where does it go after terminating at Warrington?

Are buses laid on for people travelling north of there?

Id have thought it would run to Wigan North Western just like the 19:30 and all other services from Euston on these dates.
