Yes in recent years that is true, however for many years, Pan American, Pan Am, used to have flights PA1 & PA2, that ran a route the world service, in both directions, clockwise, anti-clockwise. The route was something like; New York / London/ Rome or Frankfurt or Berlin then Calcutta/ Hong Kong/ Tokyo/Los Angeles/ New York. I think the routing/stops did vary from time to time.

It was also possible until the early - mid 1980s to travel on Pan Am from London to several German cities and Rome, which were used as feeder routes as well as intercontinental services sometimes you could fly one of those short sectors on a 747 which was great.

I travelled on the Taeri Gorge Railway earlier this year. As well as the Pukerangi service, they run a regular train (the Seasider) from Dunedin to Palmerston on the main line, using a two car 'Silver Fern' DMU. While I was there, some of the staff were discussing a planned weekend trip with the railcar to Invercargill, and talked about a similar trip to Oamaru. I expect that taking it to Christchurch isn't completely out of the question.

And, by the way, they gave me a 'priv' discount on my tickets!

That's interesting. I too have been on the Taeri Gorge Railway, it was very busy when I did it.

I will look our for those other "Special services" that you mention.

There did also used to be a revived steam service in that region called teh "Kingston Flier" not sure if that still runs or not?

I sadly didn't make it to the Taeri Gorge railway but hopefully I'll be back. The Kingston Flier ran from Kingston at the end of lake Wakatipu not far from Queenstown. Sadly it wasn't running when I was there 2 years ago.

Thinking of other widebodies you can fly short haul on, until recently you could fly Madrid to Frankfurt on an LAN A343, I think that has stopped now or is stopping soon. You could also do Manchester to mainland Europe on a Singapore 777. Quite recently you could fly on BA and Norwegian 787's but that was while they were just being introduced to the fleets. Same for the BA A380's.
