Hi looking at the gold timetable from Whitby to goathland the trains appear to arrive and depart at the same time from goathland

Realistically can you come from whitby cross over at goathland and get the train back or do they miss each other ?

Yes, you can.

They can't miss each other as Goathland is a passing loop so they have to wait for each other for possession.

When you come from Whitby you need to travel in the rear portion of the train (but not the very last coach) as it's a short platform. Then simply alight and cross over the footbridge.

At least in my limited experience of this scenario, if your train comes in second they don't then immediately give the right away to the Grosmont-bound train, it takes a few minutes, so you should have ample time to cross over.

Any idea when the work at Whitby will be finished and the new planned services/run around loop in operation?

The signaller will have to cycle the tokens through the machines before the 1st train can leave.

1st train arrives at the station from section A, gives up the token for A to the signaller and it is put through the machine and the route is then set for the second train to leave (even though it hasnt arrived yet).
2nd train arrives, gives up token B and is immediately handed token A (so this train can go almost straight away.
The signaller then puts the token B through the machine before handing it to the driver of the 1st train which can then leave.

...usually arranged such that train A is the one that stops closest to the box, so that the signalman's only got to do the 'long' walk* once ;) .

* - unless the loco crews are well trained and do the walking themselves instead!

I believe the work is more or less finished. The new timetable is due to start on August 9.

The current and new timetables are here:

Thank you for info and link, the new times are interesting, I notice on some diagrams there is a very long turn around time at Whitby of more than an hour in some cases, whilst others are very quick, around 15-20 minutes.

The long layovers are where the Northern Rail service comes in from Middlesbrough and then returns while the NYMR train is at Whitby.
Essentially, the whole reason for the additional platform

ie, for weekday timings
1110 NYMR arrives (ie before NT leaves Glaisdale)
1159 NT arrives
1218 NT departs
1245 NYMR departs (ie after NT has got to Glaisdale)

1458 NYMR arrives (ie before NT leaves Glaisdale)
1535 NT arrives
1600 NT departs
1600 NYMR departs (ie after NT has got to Glaisdale)

Note from Realtime Trains that NYMR trains are class 1 (1Txx) alongwise NT trains remaining class 2 (2Dxx)

It looks like the new timetables may start on 16 August now. I was wondering however, at the moment, while the rebuilding work was/is being completed, how are the NYMR Whitby services being operated? I presume the sides that were being used are not accessible, so I assume trains must be top & tailed from at least Grosmont.

Yes they are. From what I've seen, class 25 D7628 "Sybilla" is basically living on the Grosmont-Whitby stretch. The good lady either tops (replacing the 37 if it's brought the train in from Pickering) or tails the train with a steam loco from Grosmont to Whitby and vice versa on the return leg.

On the odd occasion she's ventured to Goathland top and tailing but on the 30 July did go right through to Pickering and back on a day where I think they had problems with the A4 breaking down.
