As someone who uses the line from time to time, the only problems are when the trains are too short (which CrossCountry seem to be addressing by using 3 or more carriages), or when they do not turn up at all. Cancellations, or short journeys, do seem to happen quite frequently.
The train has to pick up more stops because of the lack of other alternatives on the route it operates. There will always be issues going across Birmingham and the longer distance CrossCountry will always have priority there.
Assuming there is nothing mechanically wrong with the 170s then a refurb would be the best for the route.
