Nottingham to Brigg

Evening folks,

Having a Day Trip to Brigg tomorrow, but have a couple of fare-related questions.

I live in the Nottingham area, and was looking on BRFares for the flexible fares available. There are more than you would expect, including cheaper tickets valid 'via Lincoln'. (Including Day Returns)

Given the once a day train service from the Sheffield/ Retford direction, this makes these tickets impossible to use; a single could be used changing at Barnetby for the return Brigg service, but then you'd be stuck at Brigg? So are these fares just a mistake and unusable? Is there any protection against this, e.g. you could actually use any route as its impossible.

I can only get a journey planner to generate an itinerary via Newark and Retford. Would via Grantham be allowed? And via Sheffield would be a sensible route but doesn't seem to be allowed. Might this be accepted in practice, like Nottingham to Sheffield tickets are accepted in practice via Derby, despite not being officially allowed?


And a general fare question (and probably most important): due to various reasons I'm driving to Retford and getting the train to Brigg from there, then back to Nottingham. I think its only possible to reach Brigg from Nottingham leaving before 0900, so an anytime return would be needed. But if I travel from Retford after 0900, only using the ticket after 0900 (but in theory it being before 0900 if I used it from Nottingham) is this allowed? It probably wouldn't be flagged up between Retford and Brigg anyway, but what are the rules regarding this.

No it wouldn't be officially accepted just because there is a limited service. You would need to specifically check the Routeing Guide or an accredited journey planner to check whether the routes you suggest are valid for that ticket.

There are lots of tickets that are not possible to (fully) use because of the timetable. Most points of sale try to prevent this by forcing you to select a journey first. They aren't an error, some of them are regulated and can't be removed, or they are part of a pricing group (cluster) of other stations with more regular services. Some more odd customers like to buy these tickets without any intention of travel just for the novelty.

You would not be stuck; the excess would be half the difference on the return portion.

In this case, half the difference between "via Lincoln" and "Any Permitted" would be £1.60.

The best thing to do is to specify an "open return" (various sites allow this, including the forum's ticketing site) and obtain the itinerary you want for the outward portion. On the return portion, the Guard will be able to charge you the excess fare (if they even notice/realise that an excess would be required).
