There might be mitigating circumstances. An application will "normally" be refused if the conviction occurred in the last 3 years
The key word there being "normally". In my experience, when a rule is phrased that way it is so that the default position is refusal, while making it clear that exceptions may be made - I'd like to think that a minor ticketing infraction wouldn't invalidate an otherwise perfectly suitable applicant.

Agreed, on both counts.

Both documents mention "criminal record" without defining what they mean. It's not entirely clear that all parts of the documents are saying the same thing. But these are to some extent discretionary matters anyway.

@OFFWHITE , if you haven't yet mentioned to GTR the official advice about a conviction normally causing a problem for a citizenship application, then - as your solicitor may advise - it would seem worth saying next (perhaps quoting from at least one of the documents, in view of the fact that it may be hard to summarise exactly what they mean).

I just want to update you all on my case,I have managed to get a settlement but it didn’t come cheap,I had to get the lawyers involved but it’s over now.I am not a fare dodger but this whole incident just showed me how easily you can be caught up in the system and end up with a criminal record. So please don’t travel without a valid ticket.

Thanks for the update. Sorry that it ended up costing you, but that's better than the alternative.

I am guessing the combined cost of legal advise plus the settlement with the train company was excessive. Or was the amount asked for be the train company rather a lot?

Yes it was ,to be honest I could have done this myself but I think there is a relationship between the lawyers and prosecutors and that helps.
