Yes it is

Is Battle to London valid via Eastbourne/Lewes.

If I am understanding the routing guide correctly Battle is part of either Hastings Group or Tonbridge Group and since Hastings to London is valid via Eastbourne, Battle must be.

Please could someone clarify whether I am correct in this assertation or explain if i have misunderstood...

You need to fares check to see which group(s) are appropriate for Battle.

The highlighted text should read "associated with" rather than "part of" (the correct term would be "member of", but it isn't) which means you must compare fares to determine which Routeing Point to use.

Comparisons for the fares check rule must be done using ticket types SOS, SDS, SVS or CDS. Battle - London has only the SDS, so we use it.

Battle - London
route ANY PERMITTED, SDS £23.90

Hastings - London
route NOT VALID ON HS1, SDS £27.50
route PLUS HIGH SPEED, SDS £33.10
route HAYWARDS HEATH, SDS £26.00
(these fares are exactly the same for St Leonards Warrior Square, the other station in Hastings group)

As all these are more expensive than the SDS from Battle to London, Hastings Group fails the fares check and cannot be used as a routeing point for a journey from Battle to London.

Tonbridge - London
route NOT VALID ON HS1, SDS £13.90
route PLUS HIGH SPEED, SDS £30.40

The SDS route NOT VALID ON HS1 is cheaper than the Battle fare, so Tonbridge is a valid routeing point for a journey from Battle to London.

A side note from me: NOT VALID ON HS1 seems to be the equivalent to ANY PERMITTED between Tonbridge and London, but I had to look in the routeing guide (to verify that HS1 was not a permitted route for that journey) to find that out! This seems quite confusing given that there are other journeys (e.g. Dover Priory to London) where the PLUS HIGH SPEED fare is the equivalent of ANY PERMITTED. It makes using the routeing guide even more complicated than it already is!
