Although in this case they weren't stranded, they were waiting for the late running 1749 train.
The first train through the issues at Dore passed Edale at 1826, by which time the late running 1749 had left Sheffield and was on its way.

As an aside, as the delay was a points failure at Dore, presumably not many other trains got through, unless it were those that had cleared Dore before the intended Northern.
Looking at RealTimeTrains it appears that a whole bunch of fast trains got through before the stopper.

What is it that stops a train allowing pickup and drop off of stranded passengers using the local door? Or can’t 185s do that?
The guard would be in the "other" part of train that isn't accommodated on the platform.

as an aside it seems rather sad to me that a requirement that prevents a train helping stranded and delayed passengers, over rules passengers being foolish enough not to open a door at a station they had no previous intention to get off at and step out into fresh air where no platform existed.....

Would this have applied to EMRs trains too? (158s or 170s presumably in operation on the route yesterday)
Passenger safety comes before passenger convenience

Class 158s would be able to open a local door as there are GOP panels on each carriage and when ran in multiple they're connected via a gangway and guard is able to walk down the train unlike the TPE units which have no gangway a GOP in the centre coaches only.

I do not see why one passenger door cannot be opened on the TPE services. Indeed this is what used to happen when the TPE units were working the Windermere branch at one of the stations.
When operated in multiple, the passenger door that can be opened as a local door is on Carriage 5 (door 9 left-side platforms and door 10 right-side platforms)

Edale only fits 3 carriages.

So the rule limits the train to stop with front at a stop marker rather than stop and draw forward.
Fully appreciate that’s a faff and would have to be limited to situations where people are stranded and not just a regular old SSO.

Yes that's correct.

There may be exceptions for genuine emergencies, but not in this instance where there was just a minor delay to a reduced Sunday service pattern.
