History is (usually) written by the victor. In Japan's case, however, unlike most Western countries revisionism is much closer to the mainstream than to the fringe.

I can't honestly say the history I was taught at school was especially balanced.

Nothing alongside the revisionism and denial the Japanese like to apply to history. The Germans are able to hold their hands up for what happened, admit maybe it was a little bit awful and generally move on. The Japanese like to claim they did nothing wrong, between the massacres in China, human experimentatiom, POW murdering, comfort women and the continued honouring of war criminals. All of that is one of the reasons China and ROK still have issues with Japan diplomatically.

Generally, yes. You've got a closed nation where information is controlled by the state with once of the most successful cults of personality the world has ever seen and a propaganda machine to match

As much as I'm grateful that North Korea don't have a functioning nuclear weapons system, surely it can't be that hard?

My suspicion is that they've got the 'science' part of the equation down but they're struggling with the materials. I.e. they can design a missile but they don't have the manufacturing capability to create components of sufficient quality (or at least the ability to do that reliable they have, after all, manged successful test launches previously) to stand up to the rigours of missile flight.

Funny that if they got on with their neighbours more, they might have the capability to do that... although getting on with their neighbours would require them to abandon the plan. Seems like a lose-lose situation.
