True, although I think Cramlington is too far south for the southern bypass terminus. South west of the village of Hepscott makes more sense - you avoid having to thread your way out of Cramlington and dodge Plessey Woods Country Park.

HS2 was never planned to do anything north of Colton on the ECML. There would have been one branch running from the south into Leeds, and one branch joining the ECML somewhere near Colton, and then trains running to York and Newcastle would be on the classic lines from there north, there was no York by-pass planned.
Ah fair enough I've obviously misremembered or conflated various non-official ideas.

The problem is that there isn't a huge amount up near Widdrington, so an extension isn't necessarily justified from a local services point of view. For intercity services, a Morpeth bypass certainly works.

The Dudley/Cramlington end of the bypass is interesting. You may cut through a golf course between Dudley and the A19.

I'm not sure of the virtue of starting it that far south, as it's already 110mph line speed as far as the south end of Morpeth, and if you continue as far as West Chevington (north of Widdrington), 1) you still get a decent amount of mileage at 140mph potentially and 2) land is more freely available north of Morpeth.

I'd extend when massive expansion of Pegswood and Widdrington begin to build housing for the Newcastle commuter belt. Until then, turning at Morpeth is fine. But as I say, you could absolutely tie in just east of Pegswood.

From my eyeballing of it on google maps informed by a fair few involvements with actual rail projects, starting north of Cramlington means the divergence would impose a speed restriction below 125mph. 140mph isn't going to be worth it on legacy infrastructure (it's not just in-cab signalling, it's swingnose crossings, higher-spec OLE, no open platforms, etc), so this line is intended to diverge at 125mph and maintain that speed. The classic line could potentially be derated to ease cant deficiencies and maintenance burdens if worth it. Once the high-speed stuff is out you only need 90-100mph for the commuter units as the freights are limited to 75mph (although worth leaving it at 100mph if the freight ever gets that fast).

There are quite strong commuter flows on the ECML into and out of Newcastle (I mean we're not talking South Eastern into Cannon Street or something but still, comparatively strong :lol:) which do cause issues from time to time.

For instance the draft December 2025 timetable originally axed a key long distance service which was being used for heavy commuter purposes (the 0822 from Durham which is the ex-Leeds to Aberdeen which now starts back from London and runs in a slightly different path) meaning there was a thirty odd minute gap in the middle of the morning peak which was expected to cause issues with capacity (as the train before was a 5-car TPE which will already be busy at that time of day). I believe this has now been resolved with LNER running a short working from Darlington to Newcastle at a suitable time using a 5-car set.

But it illustrates the point that it would be unwise to assume that there isn't strong demand from local station into and out of Newcastle (on both sides). Of course various proposed ways of increasing capacity on the ECML proper would be quite helpful in this regard as I reckon there probably is untapped demand into Newcastle (check the number of buses from Chester-le-Street to Newcastle for instance) but there's very little scope for tapping into that right now due to the constrained nature of the infrastructure.

A clean Cramlington-Widdrington Morpeth cutoff is a nice easy solution that has minimal impact on local services other than releasing pressure on clearing the mainline at Morpeth. Given barely any LNER stop at Morpeth anyway, and Lumo need extraction, continuing the current pattern of interchanging at Newcastle Central and Lumo can use the historic line is absolutely fine.
I agree, would XC and TPE cease serving Morpeth as well? They do seem to like their intercity services. However a frequent local with a good connection at Newcastle could be better but it was mentioned previously that there aren't any more paths between Newcastle and Benton Junction. How about Northern order 110-125 capable stock as part of their Sprinter replacement order so they can fit better with LNER, XC and TPE? Also upgrading the turnouts at Benton to be higher speed would also improve capacity

Maybe Pegswood would be suitable for that, but I think more urban extensions north of that aren't feasible. More development of that nature is probably heading for Blyth and Ashington, if anywhere in Northumberland.

I would agree, although golf courses are notoriously difficult to negotiate with in the planning stage. Avoid the hassle by avoiding it and it will save time/money.

I agree that we should be aiming for a minimum of 125mph, but shouldn't we be aiming for 140mph and above on new stretches of line, whether they are integrated into the classic network or not?
The IETs are 140mph capable (and the 897s won't be operating as far north as Morpeth as far as I know).
This stretch will have no open platforms, higher spec OLE + swingnose crossings would be relatively small additional expenses as a proportion of the scheme cost.
It makes sense to future proof the alignment and design for 140mph, even if it isn't immediately utilised (especially if HS2 Phase 2b is eventually built and a subsequent 140mph upgrade programs begins on some other stretches of the ECML).

I would strongly suggest the upcoming large regional order for TOCs including Northern will be 100mph capable units for fleet uniformity reasons.
Northern's last order included the 100mph capable Class 195s and 331, so it would make sense to standardise on this as a top operating speed that is relevant on pretty much every route they operate on for a significant amount of time.

I would like to future proof for 2150, but I recognise the constraints. I also have an idea of building something similar to the old curve between Pegswood and Ashington so that the Northumberland line services can be turned into rounders without having to worry about turning off one station too early (this would allow Morpeth-Bedlington to be abandoned and save a fair bit of cash). An ECML cutoff would need to avoid such a link.

Does anybody have the link to this study? The biggest capacity issues are usually stoppers vs fast, then platform capacity, then conflicts at junction. There's only Manors on that section, it's not supremely fast, it's not that long. IIRC the headway is 4 or thereabouts, so in theory there's 15 paths in each direction, minus a few for the single line at Benton North, minus a few more for the slower runtimes of freight and the trains that stop at Manors.
I'd have thought getting that throughput at Newcastle's long platforms would be the issue, not the plainline section.
Although I'd also support 4-tracking of this section in a paired by use arrangment (fasts on the west, slows on the east) to reduce conflicts at Heaton and Benton between trains turning out and fasts.

The golf course is on the Cramlington side of the A19 and is missed by that hypothetical line.
the hypothetical line is not an engineer's proposal, but a rough indication of the concept. It would almost certainly need to be straightened out for a 125mph speed and would likely go straight through at least part of the golf course.

The fundamental problem with any ECML cut off north of Newcastle is that the ECML is around 10-12 minutes slower than HS2 for London-Edinburgh traffic, and while Newcastle and Leeds are important markets, there's limited point in building a cutoff just for them. The WCML going to host trains from London, the Midlands and Manchester to Scotland.

There might be an argument for cutoffs south of Newcastle, in order to reduce journey times to Newcastle, though more careful attention has to be paid to the stops missed in comparison to the WCML, so even then WCML cutoffs are likely to be better value for money.

Before we even think about cutoffs, HS2 must reach Golborne.

Oh I completely agree, but the premise of the thread was about ECML cutoffs. You'll get far better returns from building Preston-Carlisle and Carlisle-Carstairs sections of HS2.

Northern currently use mostly class 156s with the occasional 158 on Morpeth services, so no they don't hit 100mph!
If the DMU fleet at Heaton was replaced with 100mph stock and the timetable recast for 100mph local paths then I don't see any reason why even DMUs wouldn't be running at full speed for a few miles at a time between Morpeth and Cramlington, and between Cramlington and Manors/Newcastle.

FLIRTs are probably the best fit given that Northern want BEMUs I believe. Acceleration would definitely be needed for getting off Benton Junction

It means you'd get a fast Newcastle - Sunderland Parkway (Shiney Row) - Teesside (Stockton somewhere) - South service which right now the links are constrained on the awful Durham Coast Line which is way too slow. Teesside right now has an absymal service so throwing a Cross Country and a Newcastle LNER terminator up that way could be popular and opens up 2 paths on the ECML and wouldn't be the end of the world a much longer route.

The links within the North East right now, are terrible.

Actually you may be on to something here, in a slightly different way. Looking at the dwell times for Northern services terminating in Morpeth then shunting ECS onto the start of the Hepscott line, there is probably something to be said for providing a platform there for terminating services from Newcastle. I guess it would be somewhat like platform 4 at York being used for terminating trains from the south - that would certainly have an ECML performance benefit if nothing else.

There is an aspiration (very long term) to run tram trains to Doncaster from Sheffield (or Barnsley!) in which case you could imagine the trams coming off near Cherry Tree Road and taking a route to the front of the rail station. There's already a Doncaster avoider on that route. That said, I'd agree with Doncaster getting an overhaul to regularise platform lengths and to allow services to be segregated better (the EMR ones to Lincoln and Peterborough leave from P2 or P5, the latter requiring a cross over the through lines).

Indeed. There appear to be two leading options for grade separating Doncaster, both involve platforms 9 and 10 in what is currently the West Yard, either then proceeding via a multiple unit only (read steep) chord to the Doncaster avoider and hence towards Thorne, or otherwise heading on the Leeds lines to Adwick and then taking the Skellow branch towards Thorne.

It is now (23/24) apparently third, after Cambridge and Peterborough, but only just.
Fourth place is Leeds, which is within a few percent.

1 million passengers from London to Edinburgh can't fill a substantial number of trains alone.

Aggregating flows provides economies of scale and makes higher intensities economic, which in turn makes the service more convenient and more attractive.

Of course the direction of travel is clear with the Kings Cross - York - Newcastle - Edinburgh expresses in the December timetable, its also worth remembering that at least one stop is inevitable for a crew change anyway.

Not a terrible idea.

It's not the price I was thinking about, it was their ability to disrupt the planning process!

No, but they will need to elsewhere on the network and it's simpler to standardise one fleet order with one top speed for maintenance reasons.

Although you have to consider that the Tyne and Wear Metro will be using part of the line, so it's unlikely that it could accomodate a truly fast service.

South of Newcastle, the most reasonable cutoff is from Brafferton to Preston-le-Skerne, it would only remove a minute or so from journey times, but it saves almost a mile of distance and avoids a 85mph speed restriction. Would likely cost 9 figures so not sure if it's a good idea. The best way to get substantial journey time improvements would be the eastern leg, but since that is only truly needed for London-Newcastle, it won't happen. There is also a relatively cheap way to bypass Durham and that is to use the Leamside alignment, followed by a modular viaduct. I'm really not sure how much more is needed to get London-Newcastle, with a single stop at York, below 2h30. Maybe the Hitachi units could be approved for 150mph, and that then improves the benefits for the costs associated with speed increases, which are viable from Hitchin-Huntingdon (level crossing closures needed), Tallington-Stoke, Doncaster-York and York-Darlngton. That would likely take around 5 minutes off journey times, which would just about enable 2h30 London-Newcastle, calling at York only.

As such, doesn't seem much point in designing for less than 300kph

Maybe, 140mph seems best to start with (maybe the alignment itself could be suitable for 150-180mph) and then upgrading speeds a la LGV if rolling stock speeds keep up.

If doing an alignment for higher than 200kmh is straightforward when doing this kind of thing then it's probably a good idea to do that for future proofing. But all the other stuff (cab signals, swing nose points etc) will add a lot of cost and energy consumption to save 15 seconds (compared to running at 200kmh)

Once you tick up to 126mph, there is no point in going for anything less than the maximum achievable.

There are two factors against that:

First, there is very little benefit from increasing speeds above 125mph for short sections. At that speed, trains will cover little or no distance at 140mph, because of the time it takes to accelerate and slow down at the start and end of the higher speed limit – the higher the prevailing line speed, the longer it takes to accelerate beyond it and the less running you have at appreciably higher speeds, meaning that the time saved is small. That is particularly true when looking at increasing linespeed on an existing line, where the cost and disruption is unlikely to pay dividends (unless it is part of other essential work) but it does also apply to a lesser extent when looking at any new section.

Second, there is a specific boundary issue at 125mph. Running at 125mph is permissible with lineside signals, but any faster than that requires in-cab signalling. There are two factors against that:

First, there is very little benefit from increasing speeds above 125mph for short sections. At that speed, trains will cover little or no distance at 140mph, because of the time it takes to accelerate and slow down at the start and end of the higher speed limit – the higher the prevailing line speed, the longer it takes to accelerate beyond it and the less running you have at appreciably higher speeds, meaning that the time saved is small. That is particularly true when looking at increasing linespeed on an existing line, where the cost and disruption is unlikely to pay dividends (unless it is part of other essential work) but it does also apply to a lesser extent when looking at any new section.

Second, there is a specific boundary issue at 125mph. Running at 125mph is permissible with lineside signals, but any faster than that requires in-cab signalling. Unless there is a widespread plan to resignal the ECML and switch to in-cab signalling, it is not going to be worthwhile doing it for a few miles through Northumberland in isolation.
Indeed, but I don't think we will get a HSL Newcastle to Edinburgh, and the IET (which will be around for decades longer) has a design speed of 140mph. So if we are talking incremental bypasses built on a few sections, why not claw back a bit of time with a 140mph top speed?
How about building with higher speeds in mind but starting operations at 125mph? A Morpeth bypass could be the first bit of a longer line which is built in stages but sadly unlikely to be built anytime soon. I'd extend to just north of Alnmouth to dodge the 85mph restriction there but obviously would be more expensive. Future-proofing sounds like a good idea for new lines. Maybe future proof for 250kmh?

We shouldn't be building new fast lines with lineside signals in any case, so there is little benefit in restricting operations to 125mph.

Modern high performance units can achieve average speeds approaching 110mph over 30km jumps stop-to-stop.
The length of track necessary to make 300kph running useful when the trains will have a rolling start and rolling stop is very short.

Which there is. The (southern) ECML is currently first on the list for ETCS conversion and work is AFAIK already underway.

If doing an alignment for higher than 200kmh is straightforward when doing this kind of thing then it's probably a good idea to do that for future proofing. But all the other stuff (cab signals, swing nose points etc) will add a lot of cost and energy consumption to save 15 seconds (compared to running at 200kmh)
How many swingnose crossings would a cut off line actually require?
You only require them if the route through the pointwork is higher than 125mph.

If the cutoff only has pointwork at the ends then there is no issue.

Build the fastest alignment sensibly possible (stopping short of needing slab track etc), but start operating at 125 and in reality that will probably be good enough for the foreseeable future.

You can, to some extent, avoid the slaloming around villages and rejoin slightly further north near Acklington.

I think you'd look at both routes for engineering feasibility. Both routes would have tricky sections of engineering but both seem much of a muchness. The advantage of 'cutting the corner' is that you keep the railway's footprint relatively contained but the advantage of 'flattening the curve' is that you're following the already reasonably straight not-a-motorway-honest-guv route.

1.) Maybe, but I thought that the most of the line north of Morpeth as far as Berwick was reasonably straight (and rural, so land is typically available should any upgrades of existing alignment be needed to reach 140mph).
2.) As HSTEd mentioned, the ECML is the pilot main
line for ETCS/ERTMS in cab signalling use. A new bypass would the perfect place to start the rollout on the northern sections, along with the Selby diversion (which I believe was specified for 140mph +, so requires a lot less upgrade work than other sections of classic railway does).

Perhaps 125 would be a good starting point, but by the time the Morpeth bypass is built, I do think it will be the ideal place to test 140mph on the northern end of the line and therefore opening with in cab signalling would make sense. I don't think a bypass encompassing Alnmouth all the way from Morpeth would make more sense.
Design the Morpeth bypass to tie in at Chevington and then a separate Alnmouth bypass at some later point (Hipsburn to Rennington) would be more feasible

Genuine question here. As we are discussing cut offs in Northumberland some of the line appears to to be perilously close to the cliff edge. What is the state of these cliffs regarding erosion as I would have thought that at some point the line is going to have to be moved inland? If that is the case then surely these desirable cut offs ought to all be put in the mix and planned accordingly ?

Considering there are few to no intermediate stations on that section of route bypasses are fairly feasible without the locals getting annoyed about losing their local station. Maybe north of Berwick where the line gets curvier?

If you mean the stretch just north of Berwick, the line has already been tweaked inland just a bit many years ago, through the site of the present Marshall Meadows caravan park, but it’s only a relatively small offset, so I don’t think rapid cliff erosion was expected.

I think the next theoretical problem area is just over the border. It may be that for such a relatively short distance they’d protect the foot of the cliffs themselves, but we probably need a geology expert to work out the type of rock, and the possible engineering responses.
