I've come across a newspaper article from mid April 1871 (just after the census) which tells of around 50 new workers arriving at Rishton station (near Blackburn) one Monday morning from Newton-Le-Willows. They are brought by Thomas Stone, the contractor who built the Great Harwood section of the North Lancs loop line. From Rishton station they were either carted to Harwood or perhaps even walked there. They all changed trains at Blackburn station for Rishton.
What route from Newton-Le-Willows would these navvies have taken in 1871?
Presumably Newton was covered by the L&NWR?
How long do you think it took to get to Rishton?
Can we trace a 3rd class single fare for this journey? - presumably one fare on the L&NW route and another on the L&Y route?
For me, this takes the number of confirmed workers constructing this section of line to just over 100 by mid April 1871, and I'm curious about the route, length of journey, the cost to Mr. Stone etc.
