On sunday I arrived at newton-le-willows to catch a train and was suprised to see zero information on which platform my train would go from. There was no fixed signage as far as I could see. The departures board listed trains but gave no information on platforms. The same was true of live depatures in the national rail enquires app. The next train boards on the platforms just had a useless message. When the train came it was just announced as "the next train will be the xx:xx to Manchester airport". I don't think I've ever heard a next train announcement without a platform number before.

As a regular rail user I was able to make an educated guess as to the platforms based on the fact that the station only had two platforms and trains in the UK normally run on the left. I was able to confirm that guess with tracksy.

WTF

Platform numbers are shown on the departure screens and the National Rail app whenever I have used the station (and are showing today). If you were confused, the ticket office is normally open all the time so perhaps you could have asked someone.

The departure screens normally look like this (see 4th photo on this tweet from Merseytravel)
