I changed trains at Newport today, and was surprised to see the departure screens near the foot of the stairs on platforms 2/3 have gone. I know they weren't great as they reflected any sunshine making them difficult to read, but on a dull day they worked fine. I do use RTT but wanted to check on an "official' source before . I asked a couple of dispatchers who were chatting outside their little office, and they told me the departure boards are at the top of the stairs in the bridge area.
Couldn't help thinking it's a bit poor that people without online rail apps, or who like me would prefer to see it at the actual station, apparently now have to climb the stairs or use the lift to check which platform they need when arriving on 2 or 3. I was getting a Manchester train, which can go from 3 or 4, the latter requiring an over-bridge change, which involves quite a lot of stairs. There is a lift but you may not have enough time to use that.
Are there any plans to replace the departure information screens at platform level on the island platforms? Or have they been moved, and the dispatchers weren't aware of their new location? I would have thought this was an essential piece of station equipment.
