Three children injured after school bus roof ripped off in crash

Three children have been injured when a school bus crashed into a railway bridge, police have said.

Gwent Police said it received a report of a collision in Tregare Street, Newport, at about 07:45 BST on Tuesday.

The pupils' injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, the force said, but the children have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the scene, and the road remains closed with diversions in place.

Transport for Wales said delays to train services were expected to last until about 11:00, with some services cancelled in both directions between Newport and Hereford.

Actually the bridge is over East Usk Road. The bus was Newport Transports Dennis Trident no 436 (KN52 NEY) on school route YGl3, taking children from the Eastern parts of the city to Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, the Welsh medium secondary school in the Duffryn area, but off route for some reason.

Info from pictures posted in local Facebook groups and local knowledge.

Let's hope the children recover fully and speedily.

Looking on bustimes.org the route is supposed to turn right from Corporation Road onto Caerleon Road, but instead went "over" the junction onto East Usk Road and under the railway bridge. Not sure why but it is a junction I have passed over in a car as a passenger and it insn't the most obvious of junctions, and even me saying "went over" the junction isn't really accurate as you essentially have to loop around the Cenotaph. I just wonder if the driver got confused by that? Not that local so don't know what that route normally uses but again bustimes shows it being the same vehicle type in previous days (including the same vehicle itself yesterday) with no incident so isn't a "usually a single decker" issue.
