The reason the line was closed was that the electricity industry eventually built big new power stations on the east side of the Pennines where the coal was, and the national grid to move the electricity across instead of moving the coal.

With a lot of that electricity crossing the Pennines in the cables that have been run through the Woodhead Tunnels

That's true....although IIRC the coal from Clayton West and Skelmanthorpe was tripped to Healey Mills before being worked across the Pennines to Fiddler's Ferry either via Standedge or the Calder Valley.

I thought most of the coal mined at Park Mill colliery Clayton west was transported to Elland power station.
