Ps yes. That is your journey I think. Showing the exact train carriages allocated and indicating the intended departure platform. Platform 3. In theory this could change if some unforeseen situation arises but it’s unlikely to change.
Unfortunately it has.

Due to signalling problems on the Highland Main Line (started yesterday and unfortunately continuing today), the 1050 is being started from Aviemore.

The OP's next service will thus be the 1248 unless further service alterations are made.

10:50 Inverness to Edinburgh due 14:28

10:50 Inverness to Edinburgh due 14:28 will be started from Aviemore.
It will no longer call at Inverness.
This is due to lightning damaging the signalling system.

Hahaha. Yep, we're now on a bus going to Perth and then from Perth. We're supposed to catch a train to Edinburgh.
As unseasoned Scottish rail travelers, we are wondering how the bus Perth train connection is going to work. Is it likely we'll just get on the next train?

Yes, any train to Edinburgh - you can just get whichever is next to depart.

This link should show you the departure board at Perth, so you can physically see which is the next service and its platform:

What an irony after all this time! I am sorry to hear this - I've been off line this morning so only just noticed this.

Shame they did not just bus you to Aviemore (where trains south seemed to be starting from) but given your luggage you may have felt bus to Perth was better a smore trains south from there.

Looks like the next advice you need from us will be to help you claim the compensation payments you are owed for the delay to the journey under what is called the Scotrail Delay Repay scheme

You have 21 days to make the claim (on line or on a paper form from a station, on line usually easier if you have convenient device to do it on)

At this stage
- make a note of the time you arrived at Edinburgh station (ideally if you know the time you got on the train at Perth we can check this for you)
- your claim is based on the delayed arrival over the time you would have expected to arrive had your original train operated and been on time
- was there any First Class seating for you on the train from Perth to Edinburgh?
- keep your train tickets from the journey on arrival (not a problem if it is a digital ticket of course_

- Given the costs of the tickets in first class you are likely due a significant payment so this is worth having
- If there was no first class seating available (certainly none on the bus) you should get a further element of refund for that

IIRC you paid for your tickets from the USA so presumably from a US bank or credit card that I assume they can refund to. I am not familiar with how they pay people who don't have UK bank accounts but I assume there is a system for that and experts on here will know

All you need to do in the first instance is get your claim in within the 21 days from the date of travel - so you can have a bit of time to unpack and de-stress on your Edinburgh arrival.

we can easily help you with how to fill in their claim form on line or otherwise, and can calculate what sum you should be owed so you can check you are re-imbursed accurately.

Hope you get to Edinburgh without too much further hassle

Follow up: after sending in a complaint/refund request for the canceled service, we were notified today that we'd receive a full refund for the entire journey. While we didn't have the experience we hoped for, at least it worked out in the end.
All in all we had a great UK visit and very much enjoyed our time in this beautiful part of the world.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Thank you

I’m very disappointed you didn’t get to enjoy the first class carriage through the highlands I am pleased to hear you are getting a full refund.

Any problems with that let us know.

Did you get a decent first class seat for the part of the journey you did make by train. Perth to Edinburgh iirc. Or at least the ability to sit together as desired?

Well the bus ride was crampy and tight and the final train from Perth was decent, so all in all we came out ok. Thanks again!
