It would appear TPE are now running a direct hourly service between Manchester Victoria and Scarborough. Until about 18 months or so ago there was a direct service between Liverpool Lime Street and Scarborough but since then only a shuttle between York and Scarborough.
I can’t find out anything about this “new” service apart from booking tickets so can anyone enlighten me? Thank you.

Most are Victoria to Scarborough, but there are the odd piccadilly and airport to Scarborough services too. Pity its not all the way to Liverpool, but who knows what's coming. Currently weekends are the old Thomas shuttles due to engineering.

Did this on a Monday in late March (Manchester Victoria direct to Scarborough via Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Leeds, York, Malton and Seamer). Not sure exactly when it would have first run, though.

It was previously Liverpool to Scarborough, which was switched with Piccadilly to Hull back in 2022. The Piccadilly to Scarborough service ran every 2 hours with it going to Newcastle the other hour. Became a York to Scarborough shuttle back in December 2023. Was put back through to Victoria rather than Piccadilly last December.

TRU proposals have it as Liverpool to Scarborough and two trains per hour Piccadilly to Hull so it may well return one day.

It’s part of the four trains an hour initiative that sees a train (roughly) every 15 minutes between Leeds and Manchester Victoria.

Manchester Victoria to Scarborough replaces the Manchester Piccadilly to Hull service roughly, which in itself was diverted to Victoria and extended to Liverpool, allowing for a 30 minute Leeds - Liverpool frequency and is the more dominant market end to end.

Route started/ was restored in December 2024.

This predates the aforementioned swap of Hull/Scarborough - Piccadilly/Liverpool services. Subsequent to that the Newcastle - Airport has been withdrawn and its place in the core taken by the Scarborough. So the 4 express tph are:

Newcastle - Liverpool
Hull - Liverpool
Redcar - Manchester Airport
Scarborough - Manchester Victoria (but theoretically one day, perhaps Airport)

TRU increases the frequency in the core but at this stage there is no particular indication of what the additional services will be.

It's been suggested that the core 4tph will be provided between York, Leeds and Manchester, and likewise there are plans for the 2tph Newcastle to Manchester to be restored at some point. The service pattern of Liverpool to Newcastle, Manchester Airport to Newcastle, Liverpool to Scarborough, Manchester Airport to Redcar and 2tph Piccadilly to Hull has been used as the basis for the 29 train order for TPE for TRU which was put forward in Dec 2023 - a year after the Hull/Scarborough to Liverpool swap.

Obviously though, things may change!

2tph TPE core to Newcastle requires infrastructure interventions north of York - the choice has been to give the current capacity to the additional LNER Newcastle terminator from December, so I wouldn't count my chickens on that one yet. The path of least resistance would appear to be for it to be a semi fast service via the Leamside line(!)

I think you're being generous to suggest that the new train order size has been based on those timetable changes, I think the numbers in that were running internally long before the adjustment to east/west origin/destination pairs.

Good evening all.
Just an update. Yesterday I travelled on the 1154 Scarborough to Victoria and it was on an 802. Must be one of first visits this class has made to the east coast but I stand to be corrected !!!

The Scarborough route has had an 802 diagram for quite some time now.

The current diagram was part of the Dec 24’ timetable change, and prior to this they operated the Leeds/York shuttles in 2024 (part of the May 24’ timetable change?).

Certainly need more capacity to Scarborough during the summer. 3 coach 185s are rammed at times. But if there is not enough stick, what can they do?

Lack of forward planning when getting rid of 68s and mk5a stock! What is current utilisation of 802s?

Depends what you mean by lack of forward planning. They were removed due to a complete nightmare of train crew training and requirements.

As much as I loved the 68s the current reliability has done exactly as promised as part of that plan to improve reliability. Not known many issues on TPE for a while as a daily commuter. Bearing in mind at one time I just didn't even bother going for TPE trains Leeds to York as every other was cancelled.

Pity they have not increased use of 802s on this route, as we move forward
Priority has been given to putting them on the Hull Route (currently 3 out of 6 Diagams are 802) as it removes more diesels under the wires between Stalybridge & Lime Street.
