The M6 Toll Road exists alongside the M6, but has, I think, 90% plus less traffic on it!
I don't think it's a big a difference as that. Looking at the traffic counts on SABRE Maps, the M6 Toll seems to have about 30% as much as the M6.

There's probably a lot of traffic on the M6 that couldn't divert to the M6 Toll even if the tolls were abolished, because the M6 goes through more built-up areas and is probably much more used by shorter-distance traffic.

My figure was a little out-of-date perhaps, but even your figure shows quite a disparity.

That is the point of the toll road isn't it? One is intended for local traffic, and South East - North West traffic is completely segregated on its own road, in theory

I always use the toll when driving up north - if you get caught in traffic on the M6 you can be there for seemingly hours so the cost is worth it.

I'd be tempted except that my small van (1600CC Mitsubishi) is charged the same as a full-size articulated HGV, purely because it has a fairly flat front end. Something like a Peugeot Expert with similar load space but a pointier front end is charged as a car. I can kind of see why they do it this way as height-at-the-front-axle is something they can measure automatically without requiring human judgment, but it still seems rather unfair.

The operators should think a bit more outside the box, perhaps, given their spare capacity. They should be trying to tempt custom such as yours imo.
