Edinburgh has a new cycle map: click here to have a look. It shows off-road cycle paths in the Capital in the hope that people will switch to their bikes when moving around the city. It is not, however, comprehensive, and looking at the map it's easy to see that it's not a complete guide to cycling in the city.

My thoughts:
- It's an excellent way of getting people onto bikes; one of the reasons people don't cycle is because they're understandably rather wary about cycling on the main roads (especially in a city like Edinburgh).
- Sadly, the map doesn't show all routes, so some of the cycle routes don't "connect" to others (although you can of course cycle along roads). Whilst road connections may be outwith the scope of the map, it might have been a good idea to show at least some links between the paths to encourage even more journeys.
- I'd love to see the network expand. More off-road cycle paths are a fantastic boon for any city. I don't doubt for a minute that being off the main road encourages cyclists, and it also helps with congestion on the roads. It's also a nice scenic option (not that Edinburgh isn't a lovely city).
- Hopefully this will eventually herald a cycle-hire scheme a la "Boris Bikes"
