Try Northern 158s, always someone at the front of the queue to get off bashing the wrong button. Complete mix of top/bottom, square/round!

Or the Northern 142 door controls, they are so small and hidden that only regular passengers spot them.

Are the buttons generally lower down when the open button is at the top? Perhaps there's a recommendation to ensure the open button is not too high, but if they're both lower than normal then putting open at the top is preferable?

Those 142 door controls are bloody awful - lift buttons, facing the wrong side of the door and so worn you can hardly read the already tiny text.

All door controls on the 319s will be replaced as part of the £3 million DfT funded modifications due for completion in March 2012.

Other large modifications are being done to the 319s which is also funded by the £3 million.

So, just in case the passengers on Northern are not convinced that there is something better than a pacer, dft have decided to give the replacement units new buttons .

Seriously though I would rather have second hand EMUs if that makes electrification more likely. Better than no electrification at all. Even if I do have to suffer the third rail down here !. The 319s are obviously going to get some kind of update so they should not be viewed as that old.

Nothing wrong with 319's at all, scarily since I got qualified on 377's I would rather stick with the older 319's, just feel a lot more precise, although the seating position and cab is so much nicer on the 377! Like the new desks on the 319's though much neater in appearance!

The 377/5s aren't very good for people carrying lots of bags - say from an airport. Imagine if such a train passed TWO airports!!

I speak as someone who returned to Gatwick on Sunday morning with two large bags and had to put them in the vestibule and keep watch, as there are no luggage racks (at least not in the front or rear carriages with the 2+2 seating). The 319s were modified so there are racks at the expense of 1 or 2 seats - which means you can put your bags there.

It's the same unit as most new refurbs, Northern's ex-ATN 150s and 156s have them.

Indeed. The 150/0 units were fitted with lift door buttons which I believe were surplus from a lift factory. The replacement of the buttons led to reclassification as 150/1. I gained this information from a friend who has researched this relatively extensively (goodness only knows why...).

The 377/4s are marginally better, in my opinion. There appear to be larger and stronger racks, and more of them, but it could just be me. I was on one only the other day and it appeared to be fitted in such a way. I believe some had seats removed at the last minute and as a result there are now luggage racks where the overhead reading lights have been retained and shine onto the racks when you turn them on (this is not entirely ridiculous if you want to rest your bag on the rack and pull out a pocket-sized map to check directions).

Does that include CCTV or CIS installation?

I can't remember where I read it, but I believe so.

Not to be blunt here, but no, just no...

150/0 are the prototypes
150/1 are the first production run with no end gangways
150/2 are the second production run with end gangways

Some 150/1 units had 150/2 carriages inserted in the centre and were then classed as a pseudo 150/0 unit for numbering, but were formed of 150/1 and 150/2 carriages.

At least five 319s have the new door buttons - 363, 364, 365, 368, 379.

In the North West almost all of our trains have the open button at the top and when we get one of the old Arriva Trains Northern units that has the buttons in reverse it confuses passengers.

While I do understand some of the confusion, it shouldn't be an on-going thing as the buttons are as simple as can be really. Is this yet another instance where people struggle to think for themselves?

A basic across the board design principle is that there should be a common convention. I bet right now if you're on a PC then you're using a web browser which has a close button in the top right hand corner and if it's a up-to-date browser it will be red and have a cross in it. It doesn't matter who made the browser: Microsoft, Google, Apple, Mozilla or someone else the commonly used button is where you'd expect it to be. If Microsoft launched a new version of Internet Explorer and put the close button in the bottom left hand corner then a lot of people will be calling Microsoft idiots.

You mean like Mac that had it as buttons in the Top Left for a long time, and I beleive ubuntu still does, and that they have now gone for a LHS quick launch taskbar that means I now have no intrest in the OS at all and will be sticking with KDE based GUIs for my Unix OS machines?
