Indeed, Whistler was the second attempt to unite the two Windows lines. Neptune was the first and was basically 2000 with some consumer friendly options tacked on.

Just a word if you or anyone is thinking of going for a laser check the consumable cost and if you can get compatibles before you buy as the pages per cartridge vary immensely, plus higher end, end of line models can be got relatively cheaply and generally have lower consumable cost per page.

I have a Samsung CLX-4190 and the cartridges last a very long time indeed. Obviously the ones it comes with are only part filled, but I still got nearly a year out of them. I find it saves space and wiring spaghetti tangles as well as it combines the printing with photocopier, scanner and fax functions.

If those don't appeal to you don't buy a Mac, but they are added cost and value to many people.

Macs are overpriced. And I say that as a Mac user. 2 years ago they weren’t too bad.

However you can get a Dell XPS 15 with a faster processor, higher res display and a 1tb SSD for less than the base 15” MacBook Pro.

And yes the XPS is a premium PC made from aluminium. It doesn’t look too different to my rMBP and the main thing it lacks is the gimmicky touch bar. Whoopie do.

I know what I’m buying next time and I’ll hackintosh MacOS onto it.

I wouldn't "hackintosh" MacOS onto anything - I vastly prefer Win10, MacOS has a *very* dated UI, while Windows from 7 onwards puts the good bits of MacOS into Windows.

I bought a Mac for the hardware quality primarily, specifically the Retina display which wasn't available on any Windows machines back then. I very nearly put Windows on it but was able to put up with MacOS with some extra pieces of software on it to make it behave a bit more Windows like.

But yes, Windows machines have caught up and so I doubt I will be back to Apple for a laptop again in the near future. I still prefer iOS over Android, though.

MacOS is still great and I'll keep buying Macbooks while MacOS is still a thing. Ok,'keep buying' is overstating it..have only just replaced my seven year old MBP with a new one. The old one now runs very happily as a server. One thing Macs do especially well is maintain performance over a long period of time. That was never my experience with Windows laptops.

Mind you, HP Spectre laptops not only look the business but will probably match Macbooks in terms of performance longevity. Windows 10 is a gigantic improvement over previous iterations. I run a W10 vm for work purposes and it's bloody good. No right or wrong answer for desktop OS these days. It's all horses for courses.

MacOS's UNIX back end is pretty good, secure, reliable and fast, but I really hate the UI. Horses for courses I guess.
