Navigation Road-Stockport possibilities

It has always struck me as odd that there are no stations between Navigation Road and Stockport, despite the line running through an urban area. Are there any particular reasons why there shouldn't be any stations? And, if not, where do you think stations could be built?

Aren't there still fairly well-advanced plans to reopen a station in the Cheadle (Manchester Road) area?
