Too many people forget that our rail system was built by private money for profit and operated privately for the first 100+ years.

And anyone who states that the railways ran privately and successfully for 100+ years as a gotcha argument always fails to state that no other viable transport existed for the vast majority of the time. Only until the introduction of cars did trains finally have competition which is why private companies cannot be as successful as public entities in the modern era
