Has anyone here ever been to Naples and managed to successfully discern the complex labyrinth of information surrounding buying and using tickets on local transport?

I am here now and am trying to figure out how to buy tickets valid for journeys on the metro and regional trains that extend beyond the ‘urban area’ of Naples. There is next to no clear information online regarding how to achieve this!

Can anyone help with this?

We went to Naples about a year ago and found that you could use UK bank cards contactlessly for travel on the Metro and on the Circumvesuviana.

In the latter line the touch-pads could be hard to find, e.g. just one ticket barrier out of many, and at minor stations just one touch-pad on the wall of the ticket hall. But it all worked.

Things may have changed, but at that time bank cards could not be used on the bus or funiculars so you had to buy a local card for these and that was also valid on the metro of course. Some days we bought one-day travelcards from a shop or a tobacco stall.

I agree that information on ticketing beyond the urban area was very difficult to understand.

Integrated fares exist. Have a look at the Unico Campania app. Then despair.

That is Campania region's official 'integrated' ticketing app. At first it seems all tickets outside Naples are operator-specific though it shows you some tickets that you might not know about, such as the Amalfi coast day ticket. But if you go to the 'Buy' section and pick Unicocampania as the operator, Purchase from travel solution you can pick origin and destination towns and rail stations and see the Unico ... Integrato ticket you need. E.g. Positano to Agropoli is an AC9 150 minute Eur 7.40 (which I found impossible to buy). Paestum is not in the app despite being a railway station name and a big tourist destination.

I found it easier to do the usual Italian hunt the tobacconist/cafe/paper shop for each leg (because registering an Unico Campania account needed a text message to my phone which never arrived). You may be luckier.

Regional trains - Trenitalia is easy, use ticket machine or their app.

Edit: finding ticket sellers is easier than I realised, like some other regions there is now a map on their web site:

Also https://www.unicocampania.it/tap-and-go confirms that contactless works on EAV, metro, funiculars and the airport bus but not other buses.
