My Dad was given this worksplate on a visit to Doncaster Works in 1980, and we were wondering if anyone knew what this was from,

We're guessing at a first generation DMU, but does anyone know what class, and even better, exactly which one?

Cheers,

Are you able to supply us with a picture of the plate? This would help us to identify it.

I have, not too sure why it isn't appearing :s

For those who can't see it, it reads:

BR
B'HAM.C.&W.Co.LTD.
Lot No 30298
1958

Looks like it's from a class 104... the lot number applied to DMCL cars (50542-50583). There were 42 built and they were delivered as part of 4 car units to the North East region.
As a matter of interest, one of this batch is preserved on the Telford Steam Railway (according to Wikipedia).

Cheers @73001

Another question, how much would this fetch at an auction?

I wouldn't have thought it was of much interest to be honest. A few tens of pounds at the most if someone is specifically interested in BRCW or 104s although I'm not very knowledgeable in that sort of thing. Have a look through the previous auctions section here... http://www.gwra.co.uk/index.html as it might give you some idea.
